The First Knot Every Sailor Should Know

Before you leave the docks, there’s one knot you should know how to tie. It’s the most essential knot in sailing and it’s not hard to learn. The bowline creates a secure, non-slip loop at the end of any line, and it stays put whether you’re tying off to a cleat or pulling someone out of the water.

It’s easy to tie, easy to untie, and it won’t jam on you even after it’s been under load.

How to Tie a Bowline

We use the classic “rabbit and tree” method because it’s the one that actually sticks in your memory when you need it fast.

  1. Make a loop by twisting the line away from you. This is your rabbit hole.
  2. Bring the rabbit or the working end up through the hole.
  3. Loop the rabbit around the tree or the standing line.
  4. Send the rabbit back down through the hole.
  5. Pull it snug and you’re done.

When to Use a Bowline

This knot is very useful out in the water and has a variety of uses and one thing to know: the bowline can work loose if it’s under constant load or if the load direction keeps shifting. Tie it right and it’ll hold.

Securing to fixed objects: Tie off to a cleat, stanchion, post, or ring and it won’t slip or jam.

Towing other vessels: The bowline holds a strong loop that won’t tighten under tension, which makes it the right call when things get serious. The US Coast Guard used one to tow us to safety when we got pulled out to sea after our engine died. And that’s a real-world endorsement we’ll take.

Safety and emergencies: If you’re running a rescue on the water, the bowline is your knot. It won’t constrict around a person under tension.

Sheets and halyards: Connect your sheets to the clew of the sail, or use it on halyards to hoist. It holds clean and releases easy… exactly what you want when you’re trimming underway.
