I live on a tiny sailboat, which means I have to be picky about what material things I keep. But somehow I still manage to collect hobby gear like it’s my side hustle. Pottery tools, paint sets, sewing supplies, camera equipment. At this point I could probably open a storefront.
I don’t know if anyone else does this, but when I get into a hobby, I really get into it. I collect everything I “need,” burn hot for a while, then drop it and move on to the next obsession. The old hobby gear just sits there until the spark randomly comes back months later.
The problem is… I don’t have space for all these cycles. And buying everything all over again would be wasteful, especially living the way I do.
So now, before I dive into a new hobby, I ask myself one simple question: “Will I die without this?” It usually stops me long enough to appreciate what I already have and reminds me that not every impulse needs to become an inventory.
